Welcome to the "Mile-Hi" City!
The city was born in 1858, when gold was discovered in the sands of the Cherry Creek River. It was incorporated as a city in 1861 and became the territorial capital in 1867. The city was named after James W. Denver, governor of the Kansas Territory.

Ever wonder why Denver is called the "Mile-High City"? It's due to the fact that the State Capital Building is at 5,280 feet above sea level. Actually, most of metropolitan Denver is above 5,280 feet. The front range of the Rocky Mountains are an easy 20 minute drive from downtown via I-70. The metropolitan Denver area has a total population of approximately two million people, and consists of 40 towns and municipalities. Downtown Denver is the center of the metropolitan area.

Denver has a dry, mild climate with an average of 260 sunny days per year, with an annual average temperature range of mid-to-upper 90's (Fahrenheit) during the summer and 20 - 30 degrees above zero for the winter lows. Summer temperatures above 95 degrees are unusual. The average relative humidity ranges from 30-70%, while precipitation averages less than 16.0 inches per year.

According to the Colorado Census, there are 175,000 African Americans in the Denver Metro Area. That represents 3.8% of the state's population.
